Writing to Mother - Day 2

April 28 @ 15:00 - 18:00

Writing to Mother Course

Some of us were mothered well, some of us had difficult interactions with the woman who gave us life. Some had surrogate, alternative or adoptive mothers. With Mother’s Day coming up, now is a good time to explore this often complex relationship, giving it some creative attention through writing either a letter or a poem.

Writing to, or about our mothers can help us to come to terms with our losses, while appreciating our gains. What haven’t you been able to say to her? What would you like to share with her even though she may no longer be with us? Exploring the theme of mothering can enhance your ability to mother yourself. Beginner writers are welcome.

Some brief examples:

Biological, adoptive, others -
we've all had several mothers.
Some of us have given birth;
and then there's also Mother Earth.

Join us on our heartfelt quest.
The poem is the brooding nest
where we might hatch the words that pay
a tribute on this Mother's Day.

*
You gave me a smack
that left a red mark
I was out of line
we just couldn't talk

You gave me your car
a love gift from Dad
a husband long gone
your eyes were so sad.

You gave me Scrabble
to teach me to spell
you gave me card games
that taught numbers so well.

You gave me life
and the desire to live:
to write and to dance,
to sing and to love.

So thank you dear Mum
for doing your best.
You gave shape to my life
and for that I am blessed.
from Dawn

Dear Mum
Apart from the fact that I would not be here without you, where would I be without you?

Thank you for your guiding lights, the fights, the hugs, the glares, the sighs, the songs, the speeches, the beseeches, the Scrabble, the trouble, the cards, the hard lessons, the dogs, the cats, the gerbils, the hamsters, the driving lessons, the life lessons.

Just, mostly, thank you for being there.
Your loving son,
Giles
